Residents at a care home in Cheltenham have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.
Care UK’s Sandfields, on St George’s Road, has marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by inviting family and friends for a jubilee-themed garden party.
Celebrating in true British style, the team at Sandfields went all out to royally decorate the garden with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons.
Guests enjoyed an afternoon-tea, complete with classic treats including crustless sandwiches, homemade scones, and a variety of special cakes, all prepared for the occasion by the home’s chef. Residents also decorated muffins in Union Jack flag colours.
In preparation for the big day, green-fingered residents helped to spruce up the garden by planting a host of petunias, delphiniums and coronations.
Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of jubilee celebrations gone by, including 87-year-old Janet Bean, who met the Queen with a youth group when she was working in Fleet Street, London. Janet also remembers watching the carriage pass close by during the Coronation when she was a child and her school were invited to watch the ceremony.
94-year-old Barbara Santry remembers meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace when her daughter Anne received a CBE, saying: “It was wonderful and a great honour to experience the day – and the Queen looked marvellous!”
Malaika Charles, Home Manager at Sandfields, said: “We loved welcoming relatives into the home to enjoy the royal treatment after so long apart.
“The Platinum Jubilee offers the perfect opportunity to get together with loved ones and celebrate the last 70 years of both the Queen, and the wonderful residents, incredible reigns. Many residents have fond memories of celebrating the silver, golden and diamond jubilees with their families and communities, and we were keen to ensure the Platinum Jubilee was no exception!
“It was amazing to have the full Sandfields family back together again after so long. Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was a huge success, and we are already planning our next get together!”
