Robins up for relegation battle following Port Vale victory

Three wins in three games for Cheltenham Town as the Robins show they are well up for the relegation battle they face.
In just seven days Darrell Clarke’s Robins have earned nine points beating Cambridge, Blackpool and Port Vale. It’s only the third time they have won three games in a row in League One. This was possibly the most crucial time to do it.

Cheltenham currently sit a point behind Charlton who are 20th, but the last week has given the Robins a great chance to do what some thought would be an impossible task.
Victory over Port Vale showed absolutely everything Darrell Clarke’s side are about. Vale held the lead twice, but Cheltenham fought on and came back with goals from Matty Taylor, Jack Shepherd and the winner from an electric Will Ferry.

The win topped off a brilliant seven days for the whole squad. Manager Darrell Clarke was delighted with his side’s resilience after the game.
Clarke said: “I enjoyed a lot about our performance, to come from behind twice in the game was testament to the character of the group. It’s in a strong place at the minute. We’ve had a fantastic week, but that’s all it’s been. We now must recharge, get all our batteries together, have a good reset and build into next week. But nine points in a week with the situation we are in ourselves has been a good week and we must enjoy moments like that because it’s a big nine points for us.
“It was a scrappy affair. We were disappointed to go a goal down. Luke (Southwood) made a couple of good saves, and their keeper made a couple of good saves. We are disappointed because we don’t like conceding goals from set pieces, and we did that. That’s gave them a foot up and we scored a good goal from a well-worked free kick from Tayls (Matty Taylor) as well to get back in it. We went in positive at the break and second half I thought we came out really well bright. It was a bad defensive situation for the second goal, where we could do a lot better. Jack (Shepherd) scored a great goal to get us back in it and I thought we’d go on to win it and we did.”

The Port Vale second goal definitely came against the run of play, and Clarke and his players felt the same and were glad the team could turn things around.
Jack Shepherd played the ball down in the build up to the second goal but he more than made up for it, with Clarke delighted by his equalising goal and his will to win.

Clarke continued: “I think it’s his first League goal and he’s done brilliantly the kid. He’s come from a non-league background, into Barnsley and he is a bit raw, but he’s a winner. I could see that. He was on the ‘young’ team in a small-sided game in training on Friday and he was going mad because they didn’t win. He has that appetite to win. That non-league background for him has done that for him. Really pleasing strike.”

To show those characteristics is very important and it’s good to come from behind twice today and get the win.

The mentality of the team been exactly where it needs to be in the past week. George Lloyd has been leading the line with incredible energy, and that carries the team and sets the standard. Clarke also spoke of how important that mentality is.
“Making sure the mentality of the group is spot on and having changes, I call them the gamechangers and they are just as important. To be successful or to get out of the bottom four, you have to be able to come from behind to win games. It’s a simple fact, it’s going to happen. To show those characteristics is very important and it’s good to come from behind twice today and get the win.”

There is still a very long way to go, but the last seven days have shown that Cheltenham have exactly what it takes to pull themselves out of the hole they find themselves in. Fans have to be happy with the commitment from everyone who steps onto the pitch and that needs to continue from now until the end of the season.
