CHELTENHAM MP Alex Chalk’s long campaign on the A417 Air Balloon Missing Link Project has finally been approved.
National Highways have confirmed that construction of the A417 Missing Link will begin in 2023. The A417 roundabout is the worst congestion hotspot in the county and one of the worst in the whole of the UK. It is also an accident blackspot, with over 300 casualties in the past 15 years, tragically a number of these involving fatalities.
Air quality in the area is poor, as 35,000 vehicles struggle to navigate their way past Nettleton Bottom and through the Air Balloon roundabout each day. Following recent measurements, the Air Balloon junction is one of only two spots in the whole of the Cotswolds AONB where nitrogen dioxide levels do not meet National Air Quality Standards because of vehicle emissions.
Alex Chalk said: “This announcement represents a major milestone in resolving this long-standing bottleneck and accident blackspot. This project will save lives, cut pollution and boost Cheltenham’s economy and I am increasingly confident that work will begin in the next 12 months.”
