Gloucester legend Ludlow launches testimonial year at Hartpury

Lewis Ludlow officially launched his testimonial year at Hartpury University, returning to the place where his Gloucester Rugby journey first began.

The opening event was held at the Graze Restaurant and brought together friends, former teammates, supporters and key figures from across the rugby community to celebrate one of Gloucester Rugby’s most respected modern-day players.
Ludlow was joined on the evening by Gloucester Rugby coach and former Hartpury coach Mark Cornwall, current Gloucester teammate Jamal Ford-Robinson and former Cherry and Whites back-rower Jake Polledri. Former Gloucester and England centre Mark Atkinson acted as master of ceremonies, while Lady Bathurst, representing the Cotswold Lady B Foundation, was also in attendance.
One of the most emotional moments of the evening came when former Gloucester captain Ed Slater, a close friend and former teammate of

Ludlow sent a heartfelt recorded message to those attending.
Ludlow’s testimonial year recognises more than a decade of service to Gloucester Rugby. The flanker joined the Gloucester academy as a 17-year-old while studying at Hartpury and has gone on to make more than 250 appearances for the Cherry and Whites. He became club captain in 2020 and remains the longest-serving captain of Gloucester Rugby in the professional era.
The Bedford-born back row forward has also represented England at international level. Ludlow earned his first senior England cap against the United States at Twickenham in July 2021 and became only the fifth player in history to captain England on his Test debut. He won a second cap against Canada the following week.
His testimonial year is expected to feature a number of fundraising and community events, with proceeds supporting charitable causes including the 4Ed Foundation, which was established following former Gloucester teammate Ed Slater’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.

Representing the Cheltenham Post at the launch was Mark Hopkins, who said: “This year Gloucester celebrates one of its modern legends in Lewis. It will be a very special testimonial year packed with events, memories and community spirit.
“Cherry and White fans will have the chance to honour a player whose passion, leadership and commitment have defined Gloucester Rugby. The Cheltenham Post is right behind Lewis’s testimonial, and we look forward to supporting the many events planned throughout the year.”
