Boulders Cheltenham is offering 7-18 year olds the chance to develop new skills, get plenty of exercise and meet new friends by “taking on the wall” with indoor bouldering.
Bouldering is a sport which has exploded in popularity in recent years, thanks to its debut at the 2020 Olympics, and as a means to get creative during lockdown. Suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, bouldering has got beginners hooked and also proved a big hit, as both an alternative and additional activity to the gym.
In fact, according to the Association of British Climbing Walls, around one million people in the UK now climb regularly.
The climbing venue, situated on Centram Park in Kingsditch, is giving new young climbers the chance to develop a new passion in bouldering with several types of classes for all ages and needs.
Its ‘Give it a Go’ introductory class is an hour-long session, fully supervised by a Boulders instructor, to introduce young people to the skills needed to use the walls safely and start their bouldering journey. Over 7s can also climb whilst supervised by any competent adult, offering the opportunity to climb as a family. Over 18s can book an Adult Give It A Go session to learn the skills required, and there is also a one-off session for parents and children to try together as their first foray into bouldering, paving the way for a new, exciting hobby while keeping fit and agile. It also offers bouldering courses tailored to children, through a range of after school and weekend classes for under 18s. Building on the previous weeks’ skills, it aims to progress young people through a range of techniques classes that are both challenging and fun. Covering everything from footwork to flexibility, these innovative sessions are designed to give young people the skills to get the best out of the Olympics’ newest sport. Sam Hardie, Centre Manager at Boulders Cheltenham said: “Climbing is fantastic for children for a multitude of reasons; as well as teaching hand-eye coordination and boosting overall fitness, it helps to develop problem-solving skills and great social and communication skills. “Children also build trust and confidence through climbing and can unlock hidden potential. It also provides an environment for making new friends.
“Since launching our under 18s classes, spaces are quickly getting filled, so we’d advise booking in advance asap to ensure your child’s slot. It’s a unique way of keeping kids entertained and fit, with the potential to discover new playmates and some adrenaline-packed fun!”
